🔎 In newborn dogs and cats that have not yet opened their eyes, an accumulation of inflammatory cells and fluid may occur inside, even when the eyelids are still glued together. This condition usually appears 3-8 days after giving birth.

🔎 Cause:

Although the eyelids are still closed, germs can still penetrate. The act of licking the kittens of the mother dog or cat is also a cause of disease because the bacteria on the skin that enter the eyes.

- The most common causative agent is Staphylococcus bacteria that causes both dogs and cats, mainly due to poor hygiene.

- Another cause is that when the puppies suck milk, pathogens from the pharynx are transferred to the sinuses and eyes in the case of a female dog with a urinary tract infection (which may not show symptoms). Therefore, it is necessary to especially clean the area of the mammary glands close to the vagina for the nursing mother dog.

- In newborn cats, in addition to Staphylococcus bacteria, the disease can also be caused by Feline Herpesvirus-1 (transmitted from mother to kitten during childbirth), Mycoplasma, Streptococcus, Chlamydia or some other resident bacteria. in the eye.

💡💡Clinical signs

An eye infection manifests itself in symptoms such as swollen, watery eyes, and after drying, fluid and pus form scabs on the eyelids.

Eyelids may be redder and hotter than usual.

- All other neonates of the same litter should be examined.

🔬Laboratory Diagnostics

- Take a sample of fluid from the corner of the eye to culture to check for bacteria.

If not treated early, inflammatory cells and inflammatory fluid increase the risk of corneal ulceration or perforation, a serious condition that can lead to blindness in newborns.

- Intervention by using warm and moist gauze, along with gentle pressure from the fingers to open the eyelids, push out pus and clean the eyes. Opening the eyelids before the 10th-14th day after birth will not cause pain and will not bring any adverse effects to the newborn animal.

- If unsuccessful, try again after 24 hours with a hemostat (avoid using a sharp tip to damage the cornea) to separate the eyelids. It should start at the inner corner of the eye near the nose.

- After the eyelids have been separated, clean the eyes with sterile physiological saline or diluted betadine (ratio 1:50) many times until the eyes are clear. Use eye drops or ointment (2-3 times/day for 7 days) containing antibiotics suitable for the bacteria from culture results or broad-spectrum antibiotics.

- If keratitis is examined and the eyelid reflex is poor, use artificial tears every 4-6 hours

- For cats infected with Herpesvirus-1, use anti-viral eye drops or eye gels available in the Vietnamese market such as Acyclovir eye ointment combined with oral L-lysine and artificial tears. caused by the virus attacking goblet cells, which are the cells that produce lubricant for the eye).

- Use systemic antibiotics if there are signs of systemic infection such as decreased suckling, growth retardation, lethargy compared to other dogs and cats of the same litter.
